WTC Captive Insurance Co. had set up victim’s fund after 9/11 attacks. The program provides compensation to employees , contractors, police officers, firefighters etc who are injured in the rescuing process. The settlement amount ranges from few thousand dollars to over $1 million.
The victim’s fund was setup with Federal granting a $1billion since New York was not able to provide coverage for rescue, debris removal work, and recovery. The company has so far disbursed $657 million as settlement under this victim’s fund. Over 10,000 workers who have worked for the rescue and debris removal of the 9/11 attack, have claimed compensation, mostly due to some respiratory illness that was caused while rescuing attempts of the attacks at the World Trade Centre. This settlement would ensure recovery of the plaintiff.
This settlement would allow the first responders and workers of the rescuing activities after the attack on the World Trade Centre to claim compensation for the injuries caused to them during their service said the Mayor.
The workers will have to submit proof of participation in the recovery, rescue or debris removal activities of the attack and documentation of illness, said the WTC Captive Insurance Co. official said in his statement. Claims will be verified by a third party and payouts will be given based on the injury and sickness.
